Financial Literacy Camp
Tiszaroff, July 3-7, 2017

This year was the third time of organizing Financial Literacy Camp for the elementary school children of the Tiszaroff Microregion who live in deep poverty. The kids’ travelling was provided by the Foundation’s and the local Reformed Church’s microbuses in this year too. The home of the camp was also the local Reformed Church’s court and community house. The main goal of the camp was to present the financial culture, to help understanding how the economy works and to make it easier the students’ catching up and the integration of those who come from the most difficult backgrounds. We would like to contribute to the students’ development by the financial education in order to form a positive image of themselves and to find a successful and productive life path.
All educational materials, textbook, workbook and the board game of Compass to Finances were granted to the students by the Pénziránytű Foundation.
Various educational methods were applied during the Camp, like team work, community building activities, focusing on Roma traditions and culture, and as well sport activities. It was important to consider the range of the students’ ages when we organized the curriculum. The youngest kid was 6 years old, the oldest kid was 16. Many of them were waiting for this event since the previous year’s camp.
It was important for us to give experiences to these students who live in deep poverty. It was also significant how we can motivate them in forming their understanding of studying.
We are convinced that the students learn the idea that with financial knowledge even the everyday money matters are much easier.
This year’s Summer Camp was more popular than the previous years’ camps. Every day more than 100 kids came to the Camp including the financial classes.
During the Camp Eszter Takácsné Varga religious education teacher helped the students in discussing their questions.
The Camp accomplished its goals from the angle of education of students who live in deep poverty. By providing useful events for the children, they had not only a good camp, but gained important knowledge in finances.
